Plant list 2017: the garden of medicinal plants
By Jane Knowles, Head gardener
This booklet lists all 1093 plants growing in the medicinal garden at the Royal College of Physicians. The Plant list 2017 contains the scientific names plus the reasons they are included in the collection.
Many people know that all the plants have a link to medicine but now you can find out exactly what this link is by checking the 'reasons for growing' column where an abbreviation denotes the relevant category. These range from commemorative (where the scientific name honours a physician or significant figure in medical history), through POM (the basis of a prescription-only medicine) to THR (a licensed ingredient in a traditional herbal remedy). The name of the drug produced from the plant is included where relevant. Designed as a handy companion for exploring the garden, the booklet also gives a location for each of the plants and a map.
